Campion II's fall to strong Woodford outfit

Campion II's fall to strong Woodford outfit

Kyle Brazier25 Nov 2014 - 11:53

Woodford III 18 - 8 Campion II

Neil Lynch, Dunne, Jones, Lynch, Rogers, Carter (1), McMurray, Hill, Hallihan, L McEvoy, John Arnone, T Ronayne, O'Reilly, M Tilly, D Ryan. W Baldwin, Tiernan

Campion II's suffered the same fate that befell them away to Westcliff a few weeks ago, the cancellation of the hosts second team league game saw us take on a strengthened opposition team. Campion suffered their third defeat of the season and while we remain third in the league table, a la Arsenal, we have lost to all the other teams in the top four.

Already hit by a number of long term injuries amongst the back division, we suffered further from the late call up of two of the backs to the first team. On the plus side, we welcomed back Matt Tilly on the wing after a two year injury absence. The team played a lot better than in recent matches and after a fairly evenly contested first half we found ourselves 6 - 3 behind at the interval, Pat Hallahan replying to two successful penalties by Woodford.

Campion were rather starved of possession in the first half but our defence and structure withstood the pressure, something that will only be beneficial going forward.

The second half saw us concede two rather soft tries from Woodford line outs inside our 22, one of which was converted.

Campion woke up after two sizeable hits in midfield, one from veteran prop Neil Lynch and the other from captain Tom Ronayne which seemed to lift the team to respond through a try from Mike Carter after good work from O'Reily and Tilly out wide.
The last 20 minutes of the game saw Campion impose the structures that they have been looking to put in place for the last couple of weeks, however it was all too little too late. If the intensity on show towards the end of the game can be produced for an entire game Campion will hope to rectify their losses later in the season.

MOTM went to Kev O'Reily in the centre who gained yards on every occasion possible. Other contenders included Sam McMurray, Lynch and Mike Carter who upped their game in the second half and stood up to the challenge of the rather formidable Woodford backrow.

Next week sees us take on local rivals Barking III's at Cotton's Park. Hopefully we will be able to call on a number of players returning from injury and in need of game time. While Barking are at the opposite end of the table to Campion, games against Barking are always hotly contested and we will have to front up to get ourselves back to winning ways.
