After last week's loss at Rochford, Campion ii's were back to winning ways in the home fixture against Braintree with a comprehensive win, the game being whistled up early given the mounting injuries of the opposition.
Lynch, Dunne, W. Baldwin, Trapp, Balding, McMurray, Cussen, J. Bolton, Hallahan, T. Ronayne, Hobbrough, Hogan, Joe Arnone, Ryan, Slattery, M. Tilly, Pitkin, John Arnone.
Thanks to Fitzy for giving up front row duties to referee the game in the absence of an official Essex RFU ref and to John Arnone for lining out with the opposition to make up a full 15, after Braintree's captain left the field with a first minute concussion. Kev Balding left the gym and made a first appearance of the season in an unfamiliar second row position and the younger Bolton, James, made an impressive debut at flanker.
Campion raced into an early 22 - 5 lead with tries from Arnone and Ronayne but then had to withstand a long 10 minutes of pressure from Braintree's big pack who tried to tie us into a forward battle. Campion were alert to this tactic, spreading the ball and upping the pace of the match to run in successive tries before the break from Hogan, Ronayne, Trapp and Pitkin to go in 41 - 5 ahead at half time.
The second half was fairly one way traffic and the try count continued to mount although Braintree did manage a converted try of their own. The game was called to a halt with 15 minutes left as Braintree's injury list began to mount and they went down to 11 players. The 11 tries were shared amongst Trapp (4), Hogan (3), Ronayne (2), Arnone, Pitkin, Hobbrough
No game next week, big game away to Eton Manor on 31st January and hopefully those players still in hibernation post Christmas will be back in training and ready for action by then.
ps - Well done to Chairman Sam's and the catering team for a great post match meal after a successful VP lunch.
