Campion II's 43 - 15 Southend III's

Kyle Brazier30 Mar 2015 - 16:33

Campion's strong finish to the league

On an epic day of relentless drama, extraordinary tension and an exhibition of fizzing rugby (that's enough about the thrilling end to the 6 Nations Championship) Campion ii's rounded off their league campaign with a home victory over Southend iii's which guarantees at least a top 3 table position when all the missing match results are updated by the league officials.
>
> On a bitterly cold day, 15 committed players delivered for Campion with injured captain Tom Ronayne having to referee the game in the absence of Essex RFU official. Campion welcomed back Liam McEvoy, Pat O' Connor and Neil Tiernan after long injury absences and early season top performer Tom Ward returned to the second row for his first game of 2015. We were left without any subs as there were some no shows from the confirmed squad.
>
> Lynch, Dunne, Jones, Ward, Storer, McMurray, Rogers, Tiernan, L McEvoy, C Whitcombe, O' Connor, Joe Arnone, O'Reilly, John Arnone, D Ryan.
>
> Having racked up big scores in the previous two league matches against Woodford iii's and Barking iii's, this game saw Campion run in 6 tries with no. 8 George Rogers converting 5 of them and adding a penalty to put 43 points on the scoreboard. Southend, lying fourth in the table, replied with 3 unconverted tries of their own.
>
> All six tries were shared amongst the backs this week through Joe Arnone, Liam McEvoy and 4 for Callum Whitcombe who moved from his regular full back position to fly half for this game. Campion's forward pack, powered by a big front five, were denied two tries with the referee and team captain ruling on both occasions that they were held up by Southend - safe to say the pack were not amused. MOTM this week goes to schoolboy Callum Whitcombe for his 4 tries.

Next week Campion take on Second place Rochford away in the league play off with the winners to face Westcliff or Eton Manor in the finals day.
>
> The II's still retain an interest in the cup, having had two walk overs already we are drawn against Southend II's in the next round. This will be a big step up from playing their iii's as many of the seconds will have experience from being part of Southend's first team squad, however, a full strength Campion second string are more than capable of having a go.
